While religions have their origins in certain parts of the world, we can't assume that people whose ethnicity originates from those countries observe the same religion or in fact any religion. Similarly, a person’s religious belief cannot be assumed by their name and it's important to remember that not all members of a religious tradition follow the same practices and observances.

The way in which followers of different religions choose to observe or express their faith is personal to them and we do not condone challenging individuals on their faith or lack of it. Using accurate use of language shows respect for the beliefs of others.

Bury Council will only refer to people’s religion if it is relevant to the information they are communicating.

Names of religions and religious groups take the upper case, e.g. ‘Quakers’, not ‘quakers’.
