In February 2025, we were part of a health and social care job information event for care experienced young people at Bury College.
We were invited to share information about what a career in care is and what skills people need to be a part of that.
We were joined by:
Throughout the day, a variety of sessions were run to give people an idea of all the different roles within health and social care and the different responsibilities behind these roles.
As an organisation, our values are so important to us that one of the sessions we ran focussed on the values needed to work in this sector. We asked people to tell us what values they think around important and some of the things they said were:
We also ran a session that focussed on writing instructions on how to make a cup of tea. This session highlights the importance of the thought needed when writing each step.
A panel, consisting of people in different roles ranging from doctors to managers of day services and HR, answered a list of questions that we created during the morning.
The day gave us the opportunity to answer questions that the attendees might not have the opportunity to ask otherwise, such as what qualifications and experience are needed to start a career in health and social care (the answer is none!) and to hear stories from people already working in health and social care about the different routes they took to their current roles.
In the afternoon, the attendees had the opportunity to work shadow at either Fairfield Hospital, BARDOC or at our services: Grundy Hub and Escape. This gave them a first hand experience of the different roles and services within the sector.
Mike, who helped organise the event, has since updated us to say 'I spoke to some of our care experienced young people tonight at our Children in Care Council who attended the event, they said how amazing the day was and said it has given them a great understanding of the roles in this sector. They’re now being supported to actively look for jobs and careers in health and social care.'
Thank you to Bury Council, Bury College, Northern Care Alliance and Bury Integrated Care Partnership for their support with this event for care experienced young people.
It's surprising how many roles there are - from caretaking to IT; there's a vast amount
There are a lot of progression opportunities in each of the roles
It's really important to have the right morals
